Why did Van Gogh cut off his ear, the reason finally revealed?

It is apparently the best-known story ever of why Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear in a snapshot of insanity and drops it off at a brothel. The actualities behind how the artist ravaged himself and what occurred next would now able to be told out of the blue, as per experts, after significant crucial information was found.

The official version about van Gogh’s unbelievable act of self-hurt typically goes that the disturbed Dutch painter cut off his left ear with an extremely sharp edge blade in an attack of lunacy after he had a row with Gauguin one night before Christmas 1888. The notorious occurrence happened in December 1888 in the southern French town of Arles and was reported by daily paper and witnesses including police and artists. Draining intensely, van Gogh enclosed it by cloth, went to a close-by bordello and presented the disjoined ear to a prostitute, who blacked out when he gave it to her. Then he went home to rest in a blood-doused bed, where he nearly bleed to death, before police, alarmed by the woman and discovered him the following morning. He was unconscious and quickly taken to the nearby hospital where he was determined to have “acute mania with generalized delirium”

However, Hans Kaufmann, one of the writers of the book “Pakt des Schweigens” – “pact of Silence” in English – disclosed to ABC News that “the official version is largely based on Gauguin’s accounts. It contains inconsistencies and there are plenty of hints by both artists that the truth is much more complex than the story we’ve all known.”

According to him, “On the evening of December 23, 1888 van Gogh, seized by an attack of metabolic disease, became very aggressive when Gauguin said he was leaving him for good. The men had a heated argument near the brothel and Vincent might have attacked his friend. Gauguin, wanting to defend himself and wanting to get rid of ‘the madman’ drew his weapon and made a move towards van Gogh and by that he cut off his left ear.”
Why did Van Gogh cut off his ear, the reason finally revealed?

The inspiration for such an act of self-mutilation has evaded art historians for over a century, anyway another hypothesis originated from the writer Martin Bailey. He claims to have at last discovered proof as to his reasons expressing that it was in certainty roused – not by his contention with Gaugin – but rather by the news that his sibling Theo, who supported him firmly both financially and emotionally, got engaged.

In spite of the fact that it was already thought he had just learned of the looming marriage after his mutilation, Bailey’s new book “Studio of the South” claims that Van Gogh really learned of it in a letter from Theo conveyed on the same day he cut his ear off; a note which encased 100 francs, and the news that a fortnight prior Jo Bonger had consented to wed him.

Art historian Nienke Bakker from Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum is familiar with Dr. Bailey’s hypothesis. The research did at the gallery shows that his thought regarding the stamps is right. In any case, she depicts Dr. Bailey’s different decisions as “highly speculative”. “Van Gogh actually encouraged his brother to find a wife and have a family,” she argues. “We just don’t know why he cut off his ear.”
