Frida Kahlo 

The full name of Frida was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderon, generally known as Frida Kahlo, was a Mexican artist. Frida Kahlo is remembered for her self-portraits, pain and passion, bold, vibrant colors, surreal and extremely personal works. 

She married Diego Rivera, likewise an outstanding painter.

Early Life

She was born in Coyoacon, Mexico (6 July 1907 – 13 July 1954). She had polio that abandoned her disabled when she was 6 years old and a few people feel that she may have had spina bifida (a birth deformity influencing the development of part of the spine) too. She studied medicine and was going to become a doctor. 

She had a traffic accident at age 18 which badly injured her. She endured numerous cracks of her spine, collarbone, and ribs, a shattered pelvis, broken foot, and a dislocated shoulder. 

She started to concentrate intensely on painting while at the same time recouping in a body cast. In her lifetime, she had 30 operations.

Subjects and Themes

She used ideas regarding things that had happened to her. Her works of art are regularly stunning in the manner in which they demonstrate torment and the brutal life of women, particularly her emotions about not having the capacity to have children. Fifty-five of her 143 paintings are of herself. 

She was also impacted by local Mexican culture, depicted in splendid colors, with a blend of realism and symbolism.
Her paintings attracted the attention of the artist Diego Rivera, whom she later married. She was a communist.


She died in 1954 of a pulmonary embolism in Coyoacan at the age of 47.
Kahlo’s work is called “surrealist”, and in spite of the fact that her work is displayed a few times with European surrealists, she herself disliked that name. She said:
“They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.”
