Surindra Chadha created an impressive oeuvre of colourful and imaginative works in lithography, one of the major processes of surface printing, during the last two decades. After his studies at Perugia in Italy, and at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, from 1963-1973, he was assigned to set up a lithography workshop at the Lalit Kala Akademi’s Garhi Studios in 1976, where he has, for the last many years, been exploring new avenues in the technique of lithography.

He seems to have evolved a style of his own, treating his visions in tightly organised compositions, wherein the bold symbols of energy and vital rhythm, the contrast of stark tones and colours, score over the dramatic effect. His work is so intense, and sometimes so bizarre, that it can be labelled ‘eccentric’.

Though his recent lithographs continue to have the essence of his symbolic images of the mid-1980s, such as Blue Form in Magenta in Space, he has immensely widened the aesthetic scope of his work through his unique command over technique and the sensitive use of the media. The sensuous tones and colours are remarkable and mark his ability to cleverly manipulate the nap-roller and pressure applied to retain the identity of every subtle tone and colour, which may otherwise disappear if the necessary care is not taken.

The eight variations of his recent work Presence reveal Surindra’s creative ability to perform pictorial magic. With permutations and combinations of its motifs, he has produced a range of vital images in a play of colours (up to eight in some), and subtle textures through a wash and laborious stippling process. In some of his works, he has achieved a delicacy that is ideal for capturing misty and cloudy atmospheric effects.

Surinclra has established his mastery over elemental abstract and symbolic forms, surrounded by mysterious effects created by controlled tusche-washes—a fusion of the formal and informal elements. The symbols, although relating to the subconscious, are realised consciously for a dynamic artistic effect. They are a judicious application of knowledge, experience and sensibility, which lend his work a psychic and spiritual quality. Though aesthetically contemporary, his works possess a strong indigenous flavour.
