Viren De was born on 8 October 1926 in Bengal. He received art education from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta. After that, he came to Delhi and taught art at Delhi College of Arts from 1952 to 1964.
During the same period, in 1956, he was a visiting professor at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi and also went to New York on a Fulbright grant in 1959-60. During his travels he also gave lectures on art in Prague (Czechoslovakia) and Russia. Nowadays he lives in Australia.
Biren Dey has been doing exhibitions of paintings since the beginning. In 1951, his paintings were also accepted for exhibition at the Salon de Mai in Paris.
Since 1952, he has continuously held many important exhibitions and has also received awards. His art is influenced by abstract forms of tantric assemblages and often represents the ‘cosmic explosion of the seed’. In De’s art, the experience of life has been filtered and revealed in the form of a new truth. This art is not dependent on its own meanings.
It has only a language of colors and subtle symbols. De has complete authority over technology. Their art is unique and different from the known methods.
